Sopraseal Stick

EQUUS SOPREMA SOPRASEAL STICK VP is a permeable air barrier membrane used in wall construction to control the movement of air into and out of a building.

Air barrier systems control air movement through the building enclosure. By limiting uncontrolled air flow, they help wall assemblies breathe while reducing the risk of structural damage, mould, and high energy costs.

SOPRASEAL STICK VP is a self-adhered membrane for fast, efficient installation. It uses a vapour-permeable tri-laminate polypropylene facer with a high-tack adhesive backing, protected by a release film. Its width and self-adhesive under face make it suitable for a range of substrates including masonry, concrete, wood, and gypsum.

How Do Air and Vapour Barriers Work?

Moisture moves from warm areas to cooler areas, travelling alongside air movement. Without an air or vapour barrier, this moisture can enter the wall assembly, increasing the risk of condensation and material deterioration.

A correctly selected and installed barrier controls this movement, allowing the assembly to manage moisture while maintaining airtightness.

Air Barrier Membrane or Rigid Air Barrier?

An air barrier membrane offers flexibility, ease of installation, and adaptability to movement, reducing the risk of cracking. Rigid boards provide impact resistance but can be less adaptable, heavier, and more labour-intensive to install.

Selecting the right air barrier system supports energy performance, reduces moisture-related risks, and maintains continuity within the building enclosure.

System Components:

  • SOPRASEAL STICK VP-S FR – a self-adhesive vapour permeable air membrane used in wall and roof constructions. It prevents air leakage through the building envelope and allows moisture to escape before causing any material damage to the structure.
  • SOPRASEAL STICK FLASHPRO HT – air/vapour barrier tape used as a window flashing and for openings and transitions.
  • SOPRASEAL SEALANT – low VOC elastomeric sealant used to seal details and critical areas.

Permeable vs Non-permeable

A permeable air barrier allows vapour to diffuse while resisting air leaks and water penetration. It can be installed on either the warm or cool side of the exterior insulation.

A non-permeable air barrier also resists vapour diffusion and must be installed on the warm side of the insulation to prevent moisture accumulation.

Why Does Vapour Permeability Matter?

Preventing water ingress is essential, but wall assemblies must also be able to dry if moisture does enter. More permeable materials can dry faster, but excessive permeability may increase inward vapour drive. The goal is to choose a membrane that balances drying potential and vapour control.

SOPREMA’s research shows that low-to medium-perm membranes are typically sufficient for insulated exterior wall assemblies, helping manage moisture without the condensation risks associated with very high permeance materials. When a building gets wet, the assembly must have the ability to dry — but controlled, not excessive, permeability supports this balance.
