Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga – Hāwera

Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga is a landmark civic development designed to revitalise the heart of Hāwera and strengthen community connection throughout the South Taranaki district. Designed by Warren and Mahoney, the new multipurpose community facility brings together the library, gallery, i-Site visitor centre, AA services and café into one modern, flexible, and culturally expressive hub.

The project has been widely recognised for its architectural excellence, receiving the NZIA Western Architecture Award for Public Architecture.

The building consolidates previously dispersed community services into one 1600m² facility, improving accessibility and creating meaningful synergies between civic functions.

Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga is positioned on the prominent corner of High and Regent Streets and was envisioned as a new community heart for Hāwera. The design draws inspiration from the region’s unique natural and cultural landscapes — referencing the volcanic form of Taranaki Maunga, the surrounding ring plains, and the district’s rugged black‑sand coastlines. These ideas are embedded into the roofscape and material palette, which incorporate folded black roof forms, natural and reclaimed materials.

For this significant civic project, a DUOTHERM Warm Roof System was selected to meet the durability, environmental, and long‑term performance objectives set by the client and design team. We carried out frequent site visits at various stages of the roof installation to support the applicator and help ensure quality assurance throughout the process.

The EQUUS SOPREMA DUOTHERM Warm Roof System was chosen for its proven durability, light weight, superior thermal performance, and long service life in New Zealand conditions. The rigid PIR insulation and vapour barrier ensure a continuous thermal envelope with minimal thermal bridging. The two-layer DUO membrane provides a robust waterproofing solution with excellent UV stability and minimal slate loss over time.

This system aligns with the project’s sustainability goals, complementing other low‑energy features such as solar PV readiness, rainwater harvesting, smart lighting, and natural ventilation strategies.

The architectural form of Te Ramanui includes distinctive folded roof planes inspired by lahar crevasses and the regional landscape. These forms required a roofing system that could adapt to complex geometries while maintaining full thermal continuity and high-performance waterproofing. The saw tooth roof slopes presented particular challenges for the applicator; however, these were managed exceptionally well, reflecting a high level of skill and coordination on site.

The DUOTHERM Warm Roof, with its flexible installation options and compatibility with a range of substrates, provided the ideal solution. Its ability to deliver long-term resilience and meet the building’s environmental objectives made it a strong fit for a future-focused civic facility.
